Our CSR commitments

Performance, ethics and sustainability

At Biowest, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is an integral part of our identity and the way we operate.

Our commitment reflects an essential responsibility towards our customers, our employees and the environment.

Our approach is based on a simple principle: combining excellence in our practices with responsible management of our impact on the environment and society.

This vision is reflected in concrete and measurable actions supporting an ethical supply chain, transparent practices and improved environmental performance.

Our pillars for a sustainable future

As part of our CSR commitments, we carried out our 2023 carbon footprint assessment using the Bilan Carbone® methodology, initiated by ADEME and supported by the Association for the Low Carbon Transition (ABC).

This tool enables us to measure the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by our activities, identify our main emission sources, understand their origin and implement concrete actions to reduce them.
This initiative reflects our commitment to transparency and continuous improvement, bringing all our teams together around a common objective: sustainably reducing our environmental impact.
What do these scopes cover?
Scope 1
Covers direct emissions generated on our site, for example by our equipment or vehicle fleet.
Scope 2
Covers indirect emissions associated with energy production, such as electricity or cooling.
Scope 3
Covers other indirect emissions. This category includes emissions related to upstream and downstream freight, employee commuting, purchasing, digital activities and the end-of-life of our products.
2030 Objective: Reduce Our CO₂ Emissions by 40%…
This action plan is designed to help us achieve our objective: reducing our GHG emissions by 40% by 2030, in line with France's National Low-Carbon Strategy (SNBC).

The SNBC itself is aligned with the 2015 Paris Agreement.
Our action plan is structured around 5 main areas:
At Biowest, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is much more than an obligation: it is a fundamental pillar of our overall strategy. We believe that economic performance must go hand in hand with environmental responsibility, ethical practices and social progress. This vision guides our development and shapes our entire supply chain.
To demonstrate the rigor and consistency of our sustainability commitments, we have had our approach assessed by EcoVadis, a leading global platform for evaluating corporate CSR performance.
Biowest retains the EcoVadis Bronze Medal in 2026

The efforts of our teams and the strength of our CSR approach have been recognized by EcoVadis.

In 2026, Biowest was awarded the EcoVadis Bronze Medal, with a score that officially places us among the top 35% of companies assessed by the platform.

This medal recognizes a structured approach covering the four themes assessed by EcoVadis:

Why is the EcoVadis assessment important for our B2B partners?
In today's context, choosing a responsible supplier is a strategic consideration for any company. Biowest's EcoVadis score provides several useful assessment indicators:

Security of Supply
The assessment helps us identify and mitigate risks across our value chain, strengthening the resilience and reliability of our deliveries.
Compliance and Traceability
It contributes to assessing our practices against international criteria relating to labor conditions, the environment and ethics.
Shared Value
By working with Biowest, you strengthen the CSR approach within your own supply chain and contribute to a more sustainable economy.
Continuous Improvement
Receiving the Bronze Medal is an important milestone, but above all it marks the beginning of a continuous improvement process. Our ambition remains unchanged: to strengthen our actions and further develop our practices to reduce our environmental impacts.

We are continuing our efforts, particularly in the following areas:
Identifying CSR priorities through a double materiality assessment.
Updating and improving our carbon footprint assessment.
Developing our responsible purchasing policy.
Improving the well-being and safety of our employees.
Our Fundamental Commitment to Animal Welfare
At Biowest, ethical responsibility and animal welfare are at the heart of our production practices. Our commitment is twofold: to ensure the quality and safety of our sera while maintaining the highest ethical standards throughout our supply chain.

Our commitment is twofold: to ensure the quality and safety of our sera while maintaining the highest ethical standards throughout our supply chain.

This approach is essential to the trust of our partners and reflects our core values.
Compliance with International Standards and Guidelines
We ensure that our animal sera are produced in strict accordance with international animal health standards, including:

the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH, formerly OIE): our production processes follow the animal welfare principles established in the Terrestrial Animal Health Code.

The Five Freedoms: we promote animal welfare among our suppliers by applying the internationally recognized Five Freedoms, which cover animals' fundamental needs, including freedom from hunger and thirst, fear and distress, pain, injury and disease.
A Concrete Commitment:
The 3Rs Principle and Responsible Sourcing
Our CSR policy actively incorporates the internationally recognized 3Rs that guide responsible research and production.

Biowest also ensures ethical sourcing: we work exclusively with fetal bovine blood collected as a by-product from cows slaughtered for commercial purposes, independently of their pregnancy status.

Reduction
Minimize the number of animals used.
Refinement
Improve methods and conditions to minimize potential pain.
Replacement
Develop and prioritize technologies that provide alternatives to live animal models.
Transparency and Process Control
To ensure the ethical production of Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS), we apply strict procedures throughout the blood collection process:

Safety and Ethics
Blood collection from bovine fetuses is performed only after death has been confirmed and the absence of vital signs has been rigorously verified. This methodology is intended to eliminate any risk of pain perception by the fetus.
European Traceability
Our European-origin FBS is subject to strict rules defined by European Union regulations on animal handling. Ear tagging and farm-level identification provide full traceability of the serum back to the individual animal.
Our work is part of a continuous improvement approach supported by scientific research and the expertise of organizations such as the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), as well as associations such as the Global Serum Alliance, whose objectives we share. Our commitment is your assurance.
